Before reading this, please remember I am only sharing my thoughts and studies here, I am not an expert or theologian. I am just someone who is interested in learning God’s Word and enjoys sharing to those interested in reading!
My reading of the Word today led me here...
Feb 19 and so I read Ps. 79… The following verse stood out to me… notice the difference from KJV to NIV.
Ps. 79: KJV
6 Pour out thy wrath upon the heathen that have not known thee, and upon the kingdoms that have not called upon thy name.
Ps. 79: NIV
6 Pour out your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge you, on the kingdoms that do not call on your name;
Over the years I started comparing translations and doing word studies. As I dive into the Word & words, my understanding is developed, and I am able to bury the scriptures deeper into my memory.
My KJV also has notes with the Hebrew or Greek words from original, so that helps as well.
Just an interesting comparison… ‘Copilot Answer’ brought this definition about the word ‘heathen’-
” In the Bible, the term "heathen" refers to people who are NOT part of the chosen people of God, or to those who do not follow the true religion.
It may also refer to people who are immoral or idolatrous.
With the New Covenant of Jesus Christ, heathens are now those outside of faith in the Son of God, including Jews that rejected Him.
The term "heathen" appears throughout the Bible, including in the book of Psalms.”
And ‘Copilot Answer’ brought this definition about the word ‘nations’-
“In the Bible, the term "nations" is used to refer to various peoples and their corporate bodies. It is often translated from the Hebrew word "goyim," which means the body of a person or a people.
The concept of nations encompasses the infinite varieties of social, political, cultural, and religious expressions that form the fabric of human life and history.”
Just some interesting differences in the two translations.
IMO, now that I’m more comfortable in reading/studying the KJV, I feel the NIV is a bit ‘watered down’ and less ‘controversial’ at times... maybe it’s just me. 🙄
Obviously, you can make your own judgement on these words and how the Holy Spirit directs you.
This was only a segment of what I want to share today, and it was just for consideration…
Yesterday I read 2 Thessalonians, it’s not a lengthy book, if you want to check it out from the link, read the whole chapter in about 5-10 mins, depending on your reading speed.
Anyways, for some context, Paul was writing to the church at Thessalonica and to correct false teaching from a letter sent to the church, with Paul’s name forged.
Meaning he had already shared with them truth, and someone wrote to the church in his name to deceive them. Might have been small changes to the doctrine and truths he had already shared with them … so, he was affirming what was already shared -the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
This makes me think about what is coming in our world today with AI and how it IS and WILL be writing everything for us and quite possibly, over time, rewriting the bible.
If you have doubts that this may happen, check out this YT link titled:
‘Warning: Famous Gay Jewish Leader Wants to Rewrite the Bible Using AI’
Even if it’s small amounts of change, over time, it will still mislead many.
Just one of the reasons we must OWN and READ the hardcopy Bible, BURY the Word in our hearts and NOT rely solely on the bible apps/prayer apps, etc.
In fact, yesterday, my Bible app wanted to update the KJV version. Made me 2nd guess doing so… are they changing it ever so slowly that I would not notice?
So, I did not update it. 😉
This is exactly what the enemy does and has done for years! Small things that can seem unnoticeable and slight change of words or meanings that are meant to deceive us.
Anyways, as I read Ps. 79 today it reminded me of what I read yesterday in 2 Thess.
I find it so interesting how, often, the OT and NT reflect one another. I believe when things show up like this, we must ask the Holy Spirit to show us what He wants us to know from it and how it can apply to our lives today.
2 Thes. 1:8 KJV
8 In flaming fire, taking vengeance on them that know not God, AND that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
In both sections of scripture (OT & NT) the writer is talking about PEOPLE (heathen, nations) that will be destroyed by God for the 2 following reasons.
Ps. 79: heathen that have not known thee
2 Thess: them that know not God
Ps. 79: kingdoms that have not called upon thy name.
2 Thess: that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
And look at the cry of the Ps. 79 author for God to ‘pour out His wrath’ upon these people (the heathen and nations) that don’t:
know God
have not called upon His Name
obey the gospel of Jesus Christ
and then in 2 Thess. the author, Paul, describes what will happen to this type people (refer to the definitions above for heathen & nations -they cover a lot of different types of people) …
8 In flaming fire taking vengeance ON them (heathen/nations) that (1) know not God, and (2) that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
So, with flaming fire of vengeance from GOD, they (heathen/nations i.e.: people) will then be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power..
9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power
and in Ps. 79 the author is asking God to POUR OUTHIS WRATH on this same type of people; those that do not KNOW GOD or CALL ON HIS NAME-
I don’t know about you, but I certainly don’t want to be in this category of peoples, punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power.
And when He comes to be glorified in His saints, I will be in the category of people called ‘believers’.
I will continue to give God the praise and petitioning Him to ‘count me worthy of His calling’ that the name of my Lord Jesus Christ be glorified in me and Him in me according to His grace!!
Friends, this is not to be taken lightly… all who are reading this I will pray this for you too .. that our God will count us worthy of this calling.
2 Thess. 1
10 When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.
11 Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power:
12 That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
In closing, let me share some much-needed encouragement… back to Ps. 79 -
I pray these verses over us all!!
Heavenly Father,
8 O remember not against us former iniquities: let thy tender mercies speedily prevent us: for we are brought very low.
9 Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of thy name: and deliver us, and purge away our sins, for thy name's sake.
Thank you, God, for hearing our prayer and for your forgiveness of our sins, thank you for sending your one and only Son, Jesus Christ to die in our place, as He paid the ransom for our iniquities.
Thank you for Your deliverance as you purge away our sins and wash us clean, giving us a new heart and spirit!
Thank you for your tender mercies that are new every morning, may we not forget and take advantage of these, but may we be glad and rejoice, praising Your Holy name as we bring our worship to You, and You alone!
Thank you for Your Word, Father, that does not change, may we HOLD FAST to It and bury It in our hearts.
In Your mighty name, Jesus, AMEN!
Live Radiantly … today!
Monica
The promise of a "new heart" indicates a complete renewal of one's inner being, aligning with God's will. May this be our heart’s cry…
